Drug-Induced Parkinsons

Honestly, I did not know that there was such a thing as drug-induced Parkinson's disease. I really don't know much at all about Parkinson's, but as I was thumbing through a book, The Complete Encyclopedia of Natural Healing by Gary Null, PhD, I came across a section about Parkinson's. Page 402 states that "older adults commonly develop drug-induced Parkinson's disease after having been prescribed antipsychotic durgs, such as Haldol, Thorazine, Mellaril and Stelazine. These antipsychotics are used to sedate nursing home patients with dementia and chronic anxiety, two nonpsychotic disorders. When these drugs are discontinued, most newly diagnosed Parkinson's patients return to normal." It also notes that commonly used pesticides are also linked to Parkinson's.

I find this information interesting and have to wonder if there might be other drugs or toxins that might be causeing Parkinson's disease.

and Thybrows

I've been calling them "thybrows" for quite some time now. Actually since I first developed them myself. I look for "thybrows" to know if someone is in the hypothyroid club with me. "Thybrows" are eyebrows that have become 1/3 smaller (losing the outer third) from hypothyroidism. I was glad to hear Dr. Oz on GMA talking about it this morning. He answered one of my questions, which was, "is there anything else that causes loss of eyebrows"? He said there were only two reasons:

a. hypothyroidism
b. over-zealous tweezing

Now we just need to find out if they will grow back....

This is a great blog about this segment on Good Morning America http://thyroid.about.com/b/2010/03/15/mehmet-oz-doctor-oz-thyroid-abc.htm
Thank you Mary Shomon!

This information was passed on to me by a friend. I don't know how true the information is. I already knew only 5 of these, #4, #5, #6, #10, and #12. The rest of these are very scary if they are true!

1. Sugar can suppress the immune system.
2. Sugar interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium.
3. Sugar can weaken eyesight.
4. Sugar can cause hypoglycemia.
5. Sugar can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline levels in children.
6. Sugar contributes to obesity.
7. Sugar can cause arthritis.
8. Sugar can cause heart disease and emphysema.
9. Sugar can contribute to osteoporosis.
10. Sugar can increase cholesterol.
11. Sugar can lead to both prostrate cancer and ovarian cancer.
12. Sugar can contribute to diabetes.
13. Sugar can cause cardiovascular disease.

American Heart Association - I'm NOT wearing red today!

I know I'm sticking my neck out here, BUT... Instead of wearing red today, I'd like to take this opportunity to officially express my disappointment with the American Heart Association. It is my belief they have misinformed the public and:

1. have directly contributed to Heart Disease becoming the number one killer of women in America!

and

2. have directly contributed to the obesity epidemic in America!

How many people do you know who say, "This doesn't have fat or cholesterol in it so it must be okay to eat"? EVERYONE I know says it! Where did that information come from? I think a lot of brainwashing has been going on and I believe people have paid too much attention to the misinformation given by the American Heart Association.

For example:

Check out GROCERY SHOPPING on the American Heart Association's website. Some of the information is good, like the VEGETABLES AND FRUITS section. It's the rest that concerns me. There is much advice to buy things that are not whole, such as breads that contain whole grain. Even if a bread "contains whole grain", it usually contains white flour and is still not a whole grain! Why aren't they promoting eating whole grains rather than eating things that are made from whole grains. They also promote the use of "fat-free and low-fat". These products, especially the fat-free, usually contain a worse replacement for the removed fat. They almost always contain high-fructose corn syrup, which is VERY unhealthy. Under their "OILS, DRESSINGS & SHORTENINGS section, they've listed lots of choices for oils, but not olive oil! I'm especially concerned that they encourage the use of margarine, which we know is not a whole food, it is a "plasticized" food. This summer, just for kicks, I'm going to put a tub of margarine outside and see if any bugs or animals will eat it.

Founded in 1924, the American Heart Association has had their chance to help America. I realize 86 years ago, things were different and the medical information we have today was not available then BUT even in the past five years, a lot of information has become available. How about just in the last year? The American Heart Association should have been looking at this new information and changing what they are telling people. I shudder to think of the amount of money that has been donated to this association, to only see heart disease rise in the US!

Cholesterol

In my opinion, one of the most important things Doctor Oz recently talked about on his show is cholesterol. Cholesterol seems to be one of the most misunderstood health issues. Thanks Doctor Oz for explaining it. He explained how there is a good side to cholesterol -- "it's how we make all the membranes of our cells and it's critical for us to function normally but it's got lots of side effects."

According to Doctor Oz, the cholesterol in food has absolutely nothing to do with the cholesterol in our bodies. He said white bread does not contain cholesterol yet when we eat it, our liver sends out more of the lousy cholesterol.

Dr. Oz said, "Lots of things you can do, exercise, some medications but the most powerful of those tools is what you eat. There's no cholesterol in white bread, is there? It's not natural, your liver doesn't know what to do with it and btw this puts on belly fat and ultimately that's the big driver of high cholesterol. It's not the cholesterol you eat. When you have too much fat around your waist you poison your liver. Remember the liver makes cholesterol? So it panics and makes more of that inflammatory, lousy cholesterol." Check out this video for the whole segment Doctor Oz.

If you think you are eating "healthy" but are still eating bread and pasta - think again!!!

Mineral Powder Foundation

If you missed Doctor Oz last night, you really missed a good one about cosmetics. Let me back up a bit. About 6 months ago, my husband came home to a blank file folder laying on his side of the bed (behind my make-up vanity). As I was putting on my mineral powder foundation, I started wondering if it had been contributing to the sinus drip I'd had for a couple years. Then I thought about breathing it into my lungs. Then I wondered if mineral foundation was contributing to lung cancer of the so many I'd heard had never even smoked. Then I went into my office and got a file folder. I proceeded to hold my breath, put on the foundation and then fan the area to get the fine, flying particles away from my face so I would no longer be breathing them in. And boy was I glad I did this after learning what I did last night!

Back to Doctor Oz... Doctor Oz explained how there are absolutely no guidelines for making cosmetics. The "intended" ingredients are supposed to be listed. Any scary ingredients do not have to be listed if they were bi-products and not "intended".

Doctor Oz called mineral foundation an "aerosolized product". Which, if you've ever used it, you can understand that it is just like spraying an aerosol can. The "nanoparticles" are everywhere. Once they are breathed into the lungs, they scar the lungs and we can not expel them. He thinks we will see the damage of these products in 10 - 30 years. He said, "if you are using these products, STOP."

Today that file folder is going back into the office and I'm switching back to a heavy liquid foundation. It won't feel as nice and light, but I think I'll thank myself down the road.

Honey and MRSA

According to Dr. Oz, honey is commonly used in hospitals to dress wounds and will kill MRSA (Merser). MRSA is a type of staph infection. It has been identified as a "superbug" that resists antibiotics. Cool info...thanks Dr. Oz!
